Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is caused by exposure to distressing events such as a road traffic accident or violent personal assault.
Someone with PTSD often relives the event, experiencing nightmares, flashbacks and intrusive thoughts. They may try to avoid reminders, struggle with concentration and sleep, and/ or experience difficulties with mood including feeling detached and isolated from others. These symptoms are often severe and have a significant impact on the individual’s everyday life.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is a type of CBT that helps individuals to change their thoughts and beliefs about the trauma. They can be supported to understand why the trauma happened, accept it and find new meaning in the experience, enabling them to respond differently when they are confronted by reminders.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) is a different type of therapy for PTSD that helps people recover from past traumatic experiences. EMDR assists with processing the negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories, aiding people to see things from a different perspective.
