Systemic Therapy & Couples Therapy

Systemic Therapy

Systemic therapy helps to uncover the ways in which people communicate and behave within a system, identifying entrenched patterns that have developed and working to improve ways of relating. Systemic therapy might be completed with couples, families or other groups of people such as work colleagues, or teams providing care to the individual with the brain injury.

As part of the process, each person is provided with an opportunity to explore their thoughts and feelings in a non-judgemental way. The therapist then assists them to recognise patterns causing problems. Factors that might be identified as part of the process include unclear roles, resentments or betrayals.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT)

With this approach, couples are taught interventions to help them strengthen their relationships in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and creation of shared meaning.

They learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts. Interventions designed to increase closeness and intimacy are used to improve friendship, deepen emotional connection, and create changes which enhances the couples’ shared goals. We are unique in having expertise in adapting Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT) for use with individuals with brain injury.
