Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) involves understanding and addressing the reasons for problematic behaviour such as aggression, so as to better meet the individual’s needs, enhance their quality of life, and reduce the likelihood of that behaviour happening again.

It is important to recognise that difficult behaviours serve a function for the person displaying them. It may be that a behaviour is present because the individual is experiencing fear, frustration, distress, sadness, or even excitement. They may be in pain, overwhelmed by environmental factors such as loud noise, or feel unable to communicate effectively.

PBS is a particularly important consideration for supporting people with severe cognitive impairments who as a consequence, have reduced awareness of their difficulties and an inability to self-manage their problems.

PBS usually involves working less directly with the individual and more directly with staff, carers and/or family members so as to understand the triggers and function/s served by the problematic behaviour. This information can then to be used to address these factors, reducing the recurrence of the behaviour.
