Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy is an approach that focuses on the stories that people develop and carry throughout life. As people experience events they give meaning to these, and these experiences in turn influence how people see themselves and the world. We often carry around multiple stories at the same time, such as stories relating to our abilities, hobbies, work and relationships.
The aim of therapy is to support the individual’s recognition of current narratives and assist with the generation of new life stories that provide a sense of meaning and generate hope. People are encouraged to become experts in their own lives and to live in a way that reflects their goals and values.
Narrative Therapy can assist people to incorporate new aspects of identity post brain injury. It can also be helpful for supporting couples and families to adjust by creating new shared meaning out of difficult experiences.
